Description

Cornelian cherry dogwood is a tree that grows 6 to 8 metres tall and has brownish-yellow bark on the trunk and red-brown bark on the branches. The leaves are simple and ovate with a straight edge. They are placed oppositely on the branches. The upper surface of the leaves is smooth, while the lower surface is hairy and lighter in color . The flowers are, as the Slovenian name suggests, yellow. Bisexual flowers are grouped in cobules. The tree blooms even before it leaves, and from the fertilized flowers, crimson-red, elliptical-shaped drupe fruits develop − the drupes. The fruits are edible and have a pleasant and sour taste. Inside the fruit there is a seed with a hard shell. Yellow dogwood is reproduces by seeds, but also by grafts.
