Opis
It is a tree with gray, mostly smooth, bark. Its oval leaves with a whole, wavy edge are hairy at first on both sides and later bare. Like other beeches, the common beech is a monoecious tree, so both female and male flowers are developed on the same plant. The male flowers are grouped in round catkins hanging on long stalks, and the female inflorescence is formed by two flowers on a short upright stalk. After fertilization, a triangular nuts develops from them. Two to three such nuts are surrounded by a woody prickly wrapper called a beech. Beech grows on fresh soil rich in nutrients throughout Slovenia, and acorn is a rich source of fat for forest animals. Thus, in the years when beech bears abundant fruit, dormice and other rodents multiply; birds, wild boars, deer, stags and bears find it easier to survive the winter that year with the accumulated reserves of energy. Man also appreciates beech wood, as it is an excellent fuel and can be used for a wide variety of products, from toys to parquet. It is worth mentioning that the shell of a triangular nut is poisonous!
