Opis

The tree got its name “grey” from the color of its young shoots and leaf stalks. The tree grows from 10 to 20 meters tall and has smooth, shiny light gray bark. The leaves are ovate-elliptic in shape, and they are mounted on a stalk with a hairy stipule. The edge of the leaf is double-cut and rounded at the base. The upper surface is smooth and dark green, while the lower surface is light gray and hairy. The tree has unisexual flowers that are grouped into catkins. The male flowers appear on the tree before the leaves and are long and drooping. Female flowers are smaller and shorter and lack stalks. They are combined into inflorescences, in which there are from 2 to 5 flowers. The fruits are similar to cones and are grouped in carpels. Small round nuts with woody scales are the main method of propagation of grey alder.
